Will IPv6 ever happen? This report investigates the technical advantages and disadvantages of the new standard; what has already been done to implement it; how could the Internet survive using IPv4 and crucially what will have to happen in the Internet community for the standard to be fully accepted.
It is our considered opinion that IPv6 will be used in the near future. While it may not be necessary in America, IPv6 will be valuable to currently "address-starved" areas of the world such as Europe, Africa and Asia. The mobile Internet market will also put huge pressures on address utilisation and will undoubtedly come to dwarf the current Internet.
We would estimate that IPv6 will have mostly superceded IPv4 within a ten-year timescale.
